New Year's Eve in Italy: Learn to Celebrate in Italian!

If there is a time of the year when Italians give their best, it's definitely New Year's Eve! Lights, food, music and greetings are the protagonists of a special evening, in which the old year is greeted with joy and the new one is welcomed with hope. But how do you live this holiday in Italy? And above all, how can you learn to celebrate it in full Italian style? At DILIT we will teach you not only the language, but also the traditions, secrets and expressions perfect to integrate  into this festival much loved by Italians.

New Year's traditions in Italy

In Italy, New Year's Eve is synonymous with conviviality and superstition! Let's see some of the most typical traditions that are repeated every year, from North to South:

The New Year's Eve dinner

Italians never celebrate on an empty stomach, on the contrary! The "dinner" is a real gastronomic marathon, with rich and tasty dishes. The classic menu? Lentils, cotechino or zampone. Lentils, small and round, symbolize money and luck: "The more you eat, the more you will have!" At dinner you can't do without a toast at midnight with an Italian sparkling wine: an essential ritual to wish a successful New Year.

Wear Red Underwear

Another curious and fun tradition is to wear something red, especially underwear. Why red? It is the color of luck and passion, a symbol of good wishes for the New Year.

Fireworks

At midnight, the Italian sky lights up with a thousand colors thanks to the magic of fireworks. This fireworks display symbolizes the joy and desire to leave behind the difficulties of the past year. And don't forget: many Italians exchange a kiss under the fires, a romantic gesture to start the New Year with love.

Throwing Old Objects from the Window

Although this tradition is less common today, in some Italian cities (especially in the South) it is customary to "throw away the old" to make room for the new. Plates, glasses or other unused objects are thrown out of the window. It is a symbolic way to leave behind what is no longer needed.

“We in Italy Say...” – The Perfect Wishes

When midnight approaches, Italians prepare for their best wishes with enthusiasm. But how do you wish your best wishes in perfect Italian style? At DILIT, we teach our students not only grammar, but also useful expressions for special moments like this.

Here are some typical phrases:

"Buon Anno!": The simplest and most direct wish. You can't go wrong!

"Felice Anno Nuovo!": Perfect if you want to be a little more formal.

“ Che sia un anno pieno di gioia e succes!": To make a heartfelt and positive wish.

“Tanti auguri per un anno speciale!” Perfect for friends and loved ones.

During the festivities, Italians like to hug each other, toast and repeat these phrases several times. At DILIT, you will not only learn these expressions, but you will also discover how to use them naturally during the holidays.

New Year's Eve at DILIT: Learn the Language, Live the Culture

At DILIT, we believe that learning Italian does not only mean studying the language, but also immersing yourself in the culture and traditions of our country. We organize special activities and events that will allow you to live these Italian holidays like a real local!

And if you are in Italy for New Year's Eve, here are some ideas on how to best spend it:

Square or House?

In many Italian cities, such as Rome, Milan and Naples, outdoor concerts and parties are organized outside.  Participating in these events is a unique experience: dancing, singing and an atmosphere of pure joy! Or you can opt for an evening at home with Italian friends, sharing dinner and having a good time.

Board and Bingo Games

During dinner, Italians like to play bingo or cards. At DILIT, we will teach you the rules and typical expressions to win (or lose) in style!

Not Only Midnight

Remember that the Italian New Year doesn't end at midnight. After the fireworks and greetings, many Italians continue to celebrate until dawn with dancing and music. At DILIT we will also show you how to greet the New Year to the rhythm of our joy.

Bring the Party into Your Life

Participating in an Italian New Year is much more than a party: it is an opportunity to live our culture, connect with people and, of course, improve your Italian. We at DILIT are here to help you make this trip unforgettable, teaching you not only the language, but also how to fully live our traditions.
