Valentine’s Day is the celebration of love par excellence and, almost certainly, it’s marked on February 14 in your country too. But in Italy—where poetry is part of our daily life and beauty surrounds us—this day takes on a truly special meaning. Here, Valentine’s Day is a journey through history, tradition, romance and, above all… the language of LOVE.
So why not start falling in love with Italian, together with us at DILIT?
Valentine’s Day takes its name from Valentine of Terni, a bishop who lived around the 3rd century AD.
But Valentine was no ordinary bishop. He secretly celebrated marriages for young couples in love, defying Emperor Claudius II, who believed unmarried soldiers were stronger and more loyal to the army.
For following his heart—and helping others follow theirs—Valentine was imprisoned and later martyred on February 14, 273 AD.
During the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became firmly associated with romantic love, thanks to courtly literature and the dolce stil novo. Great poets such as Dante and Petrarch transformed love into timeless words, making Italian the language of love known all over the world.
Today, Valentine’s Day in Italy is the perfect excuse for a romantic dinner out—perhaps in the historic city center, surrounded by soft lights and atmosphere. Couples exchange flowers, chocolates, gifts and heartfelt notes. And what could be more romantic than a love message written in Italian?
With us, you’ll learn how to write unforgettable ones.
Italy’s Valentine’s traditions vary from region to region and from city to city. In Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, you can experience “Verona in Love”, a city-wide celebration filled with events, art installations and love messages in the streets.
And that’s just the beginning. Venice, Florence and Rome offer breathtaking backdrops for romantic walks and unforgettable moments.
And Rome? Rome has something extra. Right in the heart of the city, there’s DILIT—the perfect place to truly fall in love.
These words open a famous poem by Guido Guinizzelli, a great Italian poet of the 13th century. Written in ancient Italian, they mean: “Love always returns to a noble heart.”
We Italians know this well. Saying “ti amo”, “ti voglio bene”, or writing a romantic dedication carries deep emotional value. Learning Italian also means learning how to express feelings, emotions and human connection.
Come on—can you resist?
Imagine spending Valentine’s Day in Rome: a plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce and fresh basil—our first true love—followed by a hand-in-hand walk along the Tiber. Add our passion for coffee, wine and good conversation, and you have an experience to remember.
With DILIT, you don’t just study Italian—you live it.
Valentine’s Day reminds us that love is made of shared moments, experiences and words. To truly experience Italy, you shouldn’t live it as a tourist, but as a protagonist. Only then does what you love stay with you forever.
And the first step? Learning Italian in Italy. Did you know that love is one of the strongest motivations for learning a foreign language? Then come and do it at DILIT, in an international, welcoming and constantly evolving environment.
Turn your journey into a real love story—with the Italian language, with Italy, and above all, with yourself.
This Valentine’s Day, give yourself the perfect gift: join us. We’ll take care of the rest.
